ProposalInstallation of Photovoltaic (PV) Module(s) on the Hamilton International Middle School (HIMS). This PV installation serves to teach children the science of alternative energy, electrician’s trade skills, architectual design and electrical engineering. And raise awareness of solar as an alternative power source within the community of Wallingford and beyond.
Seattle City Light's Green Power Program has developed similar installations that my be viewed and output monitored "live" by going to the following links:
The organization, Wallingford Solar Initiative has dedicated volunteers committed to a successful installation and ongoing support, e.g.: Jason Williams President of licensed electrical contractor Artisan Electric, Inc.’s, Lasse Jaakola RA, Stanley Florek CEO of Tangerine Solar, Bill Levin HIMS Science Teacher, Chuck Lare Electrical Engineer, Tony Billera Project Management, Sonja Gustafson G2B Homes Marketing Manager, Vince Lyons Design Review Manager, Dept. of Planning and Development City of Seattle (participating as a neighborhood volunteer), Josh Halpin Public Relations and Nicole Deflaux Software Engineer.
The PV Modules would be installed on the roof of the newly refurbished building as an educational opportunity for the students and the community. The installation is very moduler allowing for increment growth as increasing levels of funding aquired. Possible sources of funding to be explorered are: Seattle City Light's Green Power Program, Bonneville Environmental Foundation's Solar4RSchools Program, local community, parents of current HIMS students and alumni.
Current StatusWallingford Solar Initiative has received support for the project from the HIMS Principal and Science Teacher. WSI participated in a very successful HIMS Science Night.
WSI has been meeting with the Seattle School District and the City of Seattle to gain support.
Open IssuesWSI will need to obtain formal approval by the Seattle School District.FundingWSI has learned from other groups who have gone through this process, such as Fred Hutchinson that Seattle City Light provides the solar panels, inverter, and meter. Additional funds will be needed for the actual installation. See also community funding sources on Alternative Energy Resources Maintenance generally minimal such as panel cleaning once per year.
